In July CMS sent out a press release notifying Medicare recipients of a possible breach of MOVEit Transfer software affecting 612,000 Medicare beneficiaries, and provided information for free credit monitoring. There is a sample letter included which states that “if your MBI was impacted, a new Medicare card with a new number will be issued to you. CMS will mail the new card to your address…”
Beneficiaries should continue to use their current Medicare card. IF you have received a letter, follow the instructions. Remember, no one will call you about a new Medicare card.
Anyone concerned about the safety of their information, can take additional steps suggested by AARP here, and keep a close eye on any credit changes.
